Leaving Nikko we headed up into Yudanaka Onsen area which is surrounded by mountains. The area is famous
for the wild snow monkeys, wild Japanese monkeys that enjoy
open-air hot spring baths.
When we arrived we were informed of the cultural traditions of the area and the requirement to wear the Yukata and wooden sandals at all times throughout the town.
After dinner we took a stroll through the ambient streets if Yudanaka and enjoyed three more onsens.
Onsen - public bath houses filled from the hot onsen springs
Boiled eggs - sitting in the onsen fountain being cooked by the hot spring water 50 Yen each
We
stayed at the beautiful Shibu onsen Senshinkan Matsuya Ryokan - Ryokans
are more traditional, atmospheric inns in Japan, complete with sliding
paper doors and traditional Japanese furniture.
Our ryokan room complete with tatami flooring and roll out mattress beds
Traditional Ryokan Breakfast
After breakfast we visited the snow monkeys and enjoyed a beautiful hike through some Japanese forest.
