Hanoi - Base Camp

The many motorbikes cruise through the labyrinth of streets in the Old Quarter where the locals ply their wares.

As we have previously spent substantial time in Hanoi we decided to use it as a base camp in and out of Sapa.  Hanoi has been known by many names down the centuries, and it is said that Thanh Long meaning City of the Soaring Dragon is the one that is most apt to describe this city.

Despite our limited time in Hanoi it remains a pretty impressive city.  Hanoi truly is a blend of the old world Asia with the rapidly emerging new and dynamic face of Asia.  In its own way it really is a paradox of the French elegance of a bygone era and the rapid pace of modern Asia.

In Hanoi uber chic meets old world tradition.

Strolling along the shores of Hoan Kiem Lake located in the heart of Hanoi is a pleasant way to spend the afternoon.  There is plenty of buzz with all the activity and the little pagoda that stands in the centre of the Lake is so elegant.  The iconic red bridge that connects the temple to the main land known as The Huc (The Rising Sun) is so evocative of Hanoi.

KOTO (Know One Teach One)

Eating at Koto not only provide the body with nutrition but nourishes the soul.  We had the wonderful experience of eating at Koto 8 years ago and decided to return to this stunning multi-level restaurant which runs vocational training programs for street kids.  Not only is Koto a gastronomical delight but it is spiritually enriching to know that your own pleasure allows you to contribute to the professional development of others in this type of way.  The restaurant is very close to the elegant Temple of Literature.
